There is a fine line between knowing your worth and being completely out of touch with reality. Ferran Torres, who is enjoying a long vacation following his World Cup triumph with Spain, has apparently tripped and fallen right over it.
In a recent interview to Sportico in the USA, the 26-year-old attacker did little to suppress rumours linking him with PSG as he put the ball squarely in the court of Barcelona.
"It is always good when these teams want you" Torres admitted clearly pleased with PSG’s approach to him then, "Barcelona have to show me they want me. Because I have a contract, I can wait, and I am in charge of my decisions."
Productivity reality
For many of Barcelona supporters, these are incredibly hurtful comments; not just on account of his disloyalty, but due to his audacity! The club has been exceptionally tolerant toward him since his arrival from Man City. Even though his football has been capable of great moments, the reality of his period in Catalonia is his inconsistency.
This last 25/26 season he failed to convert 20 big chances (second highest in La Liga). For a side that is based on creating chances in the final third that have to be clinical to make any impact, this is an enormous flaw.
Barcelona fans have had to watch his repeated failures for months, but instead of dropping him or shielding him from criticism (from the press as well), the Catalan club has just kept rewarding him with minutes, over those who deserve it. Now to make demands after a mixed season like this is an insult to those fans who are already frustrated by seeing him perform.
PSG's Influence
There is no denying the fact that there is a new high in his career. After his spectacular showing in the 2026 World Cup (in which he scored the winning goal against Argentina in the final). Torres suddenly seems to be overvalued in international markets.
Luis Enrique is rumoured to desperately want to work with him again. Luis Enrique the manager of Spain and formerly at Barcelona sees Torres not only as the versatile attacker they need after Goncalo Ramos moved to Milan but he can get him on a contract that expires in 2027 without huge investment.
Torres is openly admitting to this leverage. "Everything in football can change in the space of a minute" Torres then stated to CNN, leaving no doubt whatsoever that he could leave unless Barcelona significantly increases their wage demands for him.
What must Barcelona do?
Joan Laporta has adopted a policy that he will gladly renew his contract but he can’t break the bank for a player who has not yet earned a reputation of a starter and a star. If they can’t agree, the board wants to sell him this summer rather than let him go for free next year.
Of course Torres is within his rights to look after his career. Football is a game; it is not always about sentiment. But with every action comes a reaction and stating that Barcelona have to "show they want him" rather than admitting that they already showed immense loyalty by fielding him when the output was far below standard is disrespectful to them.
If his head is already in Paris then sell him for whatever he is worth at this very moment. The club needs a striker who knows how to put a chance away, and selling a player who peaked after his world cup success should be the most professional move the board can make.
