Ansu Fati’s role reduced to watching from the stands
Ansu Fati’s career has taken a blow in the past couple of seasons. Injuries have plagued the Barcelona player’s ability to perform on the pitch and his availability for matches. His lack of reliability led to a brief loan move to Brighton & Hove Albion in 2023 with hopes of resurging his career. However, a combination of injuries and lackluster performances saw his time in England come to an end without leaving a lasting effect.
Fati debuted in FC Barcelona’s first team in 2019 against Real Betis in LaLiga. Shortly after, he would score his first goal, making him the youngest ever Barcelona goal scorer— Lamine Yamal has since broken this record— at just 16 years old. His incredible start caught the eyes of the football world that saw in him similar characteristics to another former La Masia product, Lionel Messi.
The Guinea-Bissau born player set important expectations by ‘Los Culers’ that ultimately have not come to fruition. According to TransferMarkt, Anssumane Fati has missed at least 11 games in 4 of the last 5 seasons. Current Barcelona coach, Hansi Flick does not consider him to be a key part of the club’s current project and has left him out of the squad in recent games.
Ansu has made a total of 8 appearances in the 24/25 season between LaLiga, Champions League, and Copa del Rey. The majority of his appearances came off the bench while his lone start was against Sevilla in LaLiga. Fati has not yet logged any goals or assists for Barcelona this season.
Lack of playing time has fueled rumors of a January transfer. A move away from Barcelona could be the best option for the 22 year old as he looks to return to regular playing time. Multiple sources have named Tottenham as potential suitors for Ansu Fati as the north London club looks to reinforce their attack for the second half of the Premier League season. Despite this rumor, no official negotiations seemed to have taken place yet.
