FC Barcelona’s squad depth is being tested once again, as two new injuries have added to Hansi Flick’s growing concerns ahead of a decisive run of fixtures.
The most pressing setbacks involve Raphinha and Joan García. The Brazilian winger has sustained an injury to the middle third of the femoral biceps in his right thigh, sidelining him for around three weeks. His absence robs Barcelona of an important attacking option, especially with crucial games looming.
García, meanwhile, has suffered a tear of the internal meniscus in his left knee. He is scheduled to undergo arthroscopic surgery performed by Dr. Joan Carles Monllau, with his recovery expected to take four to six weeks, depending on progress. A similar injury that Gavi was initially diagnosed with before being ruled out for longer upon surgery. Losing both players at this stage significantly complicates Flick’s rotation plans.
These fresh concerns pile on top of an already stretched injury list. Fermín López picked up a groin problem earlier this week and is still expected to miss another two to three weeks. Midfield partner Gavi remains out long-term after undergoing knee surgery on his meniscus, sidelining him for four to five months. In goal, Marc-André ter Stegen continues his rehabilitation from back issues, leaving Barcelona without their top two goalkeepers.
On a more positive note, Alejandro Balde and Lamine Yamal have returned to group training after hamstring and groin injuries, respectively. Even so, both are unlikely to be risked with the full game before the high-stakes Champions League clash with Paris Saint-Germain, there is still a chance for some minutes in the Sunday fixture.
With league fixtures against Real Sociedad and Sevilla sandwiched around the mammoth PSG tie, Flick faces a delicate balancing act. Managing resources and avoiding further casualties until the October international break may determine how well Barcelona’s season holds together.
