Julian Alvarez finds himself at a point of no return. The 26-year-old Argentina international has now officially handed in his transfer request to leave Atltico Madrid, with demand that he goes to FC Barcelona before the end of the summer.
Sources inside the club suggest Alvarez is completely fed up. He feels he has been repeatedly lied to in recent months. Tensions have been simmering since February when he was allegedly given verbal promises of a future move, only for the club to seemingly change their minds.
The rift had previously been a silent, simmering one. Yesterday it blew up into a fully-fledged crisis. Alvarez and his representatives were set to have a meeting with manager Diego Simeone and CEO Miguel Angel Gil Marin in order to map out a potential move but, in a gesture that was perceived as utterly disrespectful by the player's camp, neither Simeone nor Gil Marin turned up to the discussion.
Furious and feeling completely betrayed by the hierarchy, Alvarez went back to training in order to "let everyone know exactly how he feels". He informed his teammates of his huge disappointment in the club hierarchy, telling them he doesn't want to ever play for Atletico Madrid again.
His attention is now solely on Camp Nou; there is no other club Alvarez wants to play for and he is willing to fight the Atletico hierarchy to make the move happen. However, Atltico Madrid are notoriously stubborn negotiators - they spent a club-record fee in the region of 95 million on him in 2024 from Manchester City and he is locked into an Atletico deal until 2030.
It has since been mentioned that his enormous buyout clause, which is 500M, would not be broken; they even threatened to report Barcelona to FIFA for tapping up the player before.
Now though, the power balance has been completely switched, and Alvarez's hardball has backfired. He now either refuses to play under Simeone and spend the season at home, or be sold to a rival.
