Julian Alvarez has thrown the summer transfer window into mayhem after officially demanding to leave Atletico Madrid. According to official sources from Marca, the Argentine attacker declined a big contract renewal in order to push an exit, with his one clear, indisputable priority being a transfer to Barcelona.
The situation comes after months of frustration within the Metropolitano. Atletico offered Alvarez a high-wage renewal that would provide him with a net salary of 10 million a year (the most on their payroll), but the player declined it because he wants to be the centerpiece of a team that competes consistently for top European honors, and considers Flick’s setup the ideal destination.
The Valuation sticking point
However obvious Alvarez’s wishes are, the transfer will represent an immediate problem regarding finance. Alvarez is on contract until June 2030, and his current deal contains a 500-million release clause. The Atletico Madrid sporting department knows that the player wants out, but the club insists on its price.
Atletico will charge 150 million for him in order for them to enter into negotiations, a fee that goes against Barcelona's summer finances, The board has planned for expenditure in the region of 100 million.
As you know, Deco is chasing low-cost alternatives and free agents like Marcos Senesi and Bernardo Silva to protect the Blaugrana’s finances, but closing the 50 million gap with Atletico would force them to negotiate at the highest level.
Why Alvarez wants Barcelona
Alvarez has been at Atletico for two seasons, scoring 18 goals in all competitions this season. Despite maintaining a good professional relationship with Diego Simeone, the attacker wants to be more of a lead forward and to play within a more dominant system, which Barcelona will guarantee him while keeping his current life situation.
Top European clubs such as Paris Saint-Germain and Arsenal have been following the player's situation, and both clubs possess the money to meet Atletico's 150 million valuation of the player, but the Argentinian has other ideas and wishes to stay in the Spanish league.
The first contacts have already been made between Barcelona and Atletico, but it is going to be difficult for the striker's camp to convince the Atletico hierarchy to drop their record-breaking valuation in order to facilitate the deal to the Spotify Camp Nou.
Alternatives like Joao Pedro is also at the top of the list for Barcelona's striker search, and it is highly likelty that Barcelona will secure one of the signatures of Alvarez or Joao Pedro in the coming transfer window.
