FC Barcelona have finally given Lamine Yamal the green light to play for the Spanish National team in the 2026 World Cup, but the club's medical team has given a no-compromise ultimatum to the Spanish Football Federation.

According to AS Diario, the young winger is set to be managed under a "highly monitored" staggered minute restriction. Barcelona do not want to hand their prize asset to Luis de la Fuente without complete authority of his physical management.

Exact medical conditions

Barcelona want the Spanish medical team to take the Group Stage as a period for rehabilitation and not for full-blown competitive football.

  • Game 1 vs. Cape Verde: Player will be limited to a maximum of 15 minutes of play to ease himself in and get match rhythm. He will only enter the pitch for the dying stages of the game.
  • Game 2 vs. Saudi Arabia: Player will be capped at 60 minutes which would allow him to start but to be substituted before any potential muscle fatigue is reached.
  • Game 3 vs. Uruguay: If he can pass the first two tests physically without any pain, then Yamal will start and not have a minute cap.

A prevention of another Pedri & Gavi situation

The all-out war waged by Barcelona's board against the national side is completely justifiable, as the Catalan club will refuse to see their young talent be victim to the historic mishandling by the Spanish FA.

They are determined not to see another Pedri being ran into the ground in 73 matches and have their most important players having physical limitations for years to come. Pedri's lost around 2 years of prime due to exhaustion. And Gavi, who tore his ACL in an unnecessary qualifier in late 2023, due to Spanish FA negligence.

These hard limits set on Yamal are Barcelona's declaration that they will never let national team coaches gamble with the physical health of the Barcelona's products again.

Flick needs a fully fit Yamal to be present and ready to take on the 2026/2027 La Liga season as well as the much desired Champions League. Throwing an 18-year-old into the World Cup fixture schedule directly following an injury, is an incredibly risky call from a medical perspective and these 15 and 60 minute constraints act as a necessary buffer zone.

How will this affect Spain's tactics?

Being one of the clear favourites, Spain's initial World Cup strategy now has to be rethought. They will not have Yamal fit to play for 90 minutes in their first two World Cup matches and Luis de la Fuente will have to start others. It is now on other Barca teammates like Ferran Torres and Dani Olmo to carry the team in front of goal against Cape Verde and Saudi Arabia.

Failure to succeed in these two first World Cup matches will undoubtedly lead to increased pressure on de la Fuente to overrule Barcelona's medical condition, which he knows would be a fatal blow in the club-national team relationship. His options for how he deals with this challenge are final.
