Lionel Messi has turned 39 today and the GOAT isn’t retiring soon. It seems appropriate, given his performances in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, and after breaking the all-time scoring record with his two goals in the last match against Austria, that the number 10 would today turn 39 in style.

In doing so, Lionel Messi is looking to shut down any rumors that he may be retiring from the sport in the near future. When asked by reporters whether he was contemplating retirement, here is what he had to say:

"Yes, yes. I will continue for some time, as long as I can contribute, feel good physically, and help my teammates. I will keep playing."

He will keep playing

After a difficult journey with Argentina in previous years, Messi is again playing in the World Cup at the age of 39, and continues to lead this tournament by storm. After a hat-trick against Algeria in group D action, then followed it up by bagging two goals in a stunning 4-2 victory over Austria to leapfrog Miroslav Klose in the record books as the top scorer of all time in the FIFA World Cup finals.

He feels like the boss on the field

It appears that the Argentine is playing some of the best football of his career at nearly 40, despite facing injury issues in club-level; he's still the real deal. He's now on five goals for this year's World Cup and should be in the race for the golden boot. He’s 39, still on fire and looking to continue proving, every day, to the world of football how incredible his passion for the beautiful game really is.

Asked if he was planning to continue all the way to 2030, the captain shrugged and admitted, "it seems a bit far off" but did emphasize that "I'm going to take it one day at a time." Happy 39th Birthday, Leo!
