Pini Zahavi flew into Barcelona this week with two intentions: to resolve Hansi Flick's contract situation and Robert Lewandowski's future. According to Sky Sports, a third name had been introduced into the conversation; Luka Vuskovic. 19-year old Tottenham owned defender. And quite possibly the most exciting centre-back prospect in Europe right now.
Why Zahavi holds the keys to all of them
This is unique because all three of the key individuals that matter for Barcelona's short-term future are represented by the same agent. Zahavi is in the Catalan capital in order to conclude Hansi Flick's contract renewal and Lewandowski's future, and in addition has added Vukovic's future to a tightly packed agenda.
Zahavi's shares a warm relationship with president Joan Laporta. He represents Hansi Flick, Lewandowski and nineteen year old Vuskovic. The influence the agent has on these negotiations is very real.
Who is Luka Vuskovic?
The 19-year-old Croatian signed for Tottenham for £11m in 2023 with the deal officially taking effect in July 2025 once he turned 18. Upon arrival, he was immediately loaned out to Hamburger SV for this season. The defender hasn't played a single senior game for Spurs but has rapidly become one of Bundesliga's most sought-after youngsters.
The numbers speak volumes:
- 5 Bundesliga goals from centre-back including penalties
- Won 13/13 duels in one game against Wolfsburg: the same record as a Hamburg legend from 55 years ago.
- Described as "a force of nature" and "a generational talent" by former Spurs coach Igor Tudor.
- "Luka is unbelievable. I always want to say he's a world star already but he is still so young" said Hamburg team mate Jonas Meffert
Vuskovic has been completely upfront about his own desire; "It wasn't really the Premier League I was wanting and it still isn't. Among the European leagues, Spain has always been the one closest to my ambitions". That statement alone clearly states where his head is at. Yahoo Sports
The problem: Tottenham
The North Londoners' director of football Johan Lange has already personally visited Vukovic in Hamburg to begin talks about a contract renewal. His contract lasts until 2030 and Spurs are reportedly demanding 60m for him.
If either Cristian Romero or Micky van de Ven leave Tottenham this summer, then there is a possibility of Vuskovic being integrated into the squad. Should Spurs be relegated, their position will be severely weakened and many of their players would want to leave.
How does he fit Flick's tactics?
Physicality with an ability to play through the lines means that Vuskovic would slot into Barcelona's longer-term vision. The high defensive line demands a centre-back who is able to distribute the ball from the back, is comfortable defending in space and winning aerial duels. The 19-year-old certainly fits that criteria.
The question mark hanging over him is simply how ready he is for this step-up. An enormous step-up it is from Hamburger SV to FC Barcelona. While Flick does appear open to new signings and scout's recommendations, it is difficult to see him coming in and starting instantly.
The bottom line
Zahavi is at the table, Barcelona wants him and the player wants Spain but the only sticking point is Tottenham's asking price of 60m which Barcelona just cannot currently afford. Kounde is likely to leave this season and it's believed Premier League clubs are also keen on Araujo's services. If so, that might free up funds.
Bayern are also looking into this situation, so Barcelona cannot afford to hesitate.
