Marc Casado is emerging as a key player in the Barcelona midfield

Marc Casado has developed into one of Barcelona's most stable and reliable players this season, seamlessly transitioning from an intriguing La Masia prospect to a first-team regular. Having started six out of the team’s seven La Liga matches, the 21-year-old midfielder has earned the trust of Hansi Flick and his coaching staff, delivering assured performances in the heart of midfield.

During the preseason, Flick made it a priority to familiarize himself with both Barcelona's academy and first team, identifying a handful of players he believed could make an immediate impact. Among that bunch was Casado, along with Pau Victor and Marc Bernal.

The trio shined in preseason action, but Casado has been the only one to carve out a consistent role as the season unfolds. Pau Victor has seen limited minutes due to the crowded nature of Barcelona's attack, while 17-year-old Bernal suffered a season-ending ACL injury, cutting short his opportunity to prove himself.

The absence of key midfielders Frenkie de Jong and Gavi opened a window for Casado to step up, and he’s seized his chances. The Spaniard has offered a calming presence in attack and defense, even showcasing his playmaking instincts with two assists in seven appearances. His composure under pressure and defensive discipline have been instrumental in keeping Barcelona at the top of the La Liga table.

What’s more impressive is Casado’s maturity beyond his years. Despite being thrust into a significant role due to injuries, the Spanish international has seamlessly adapted to the first team, slotting into the crux of the midfield as if he’s played there for years. Flick and his staff have praised his poise and reliability, clearly designating him a key piece of Barcelona’s plans moving forward.

As Dani Olmo, Gavi, and de Jong are each gearing up for a return after the international break, Barcelona’s midfield depth will be greatly enhanced. However, Casado’s recent performances have proven his ability to compete at the highest level.

Casado’s role is secure, albeit with potentially fewer minutes moving forward. Still, his impact on the squad is undeniable, ensuring he will remain one of Flick’s go-to options as Barcelona aims to reclaim La Liga supremacy.
