Since Neymar left the Blaugrana club in exchange for a mammoth amount of €222M, the club's financial decisions haven't sound efficient. Though such a significant fee guaranteed 2-3 superstars, who could have guided Barcelona down the glory path they have been lacking recently, the Catalan club's decisions worsened even its initial situation.
Are FC Barcelona's financial problems much bigger than they appear?
Even though President Laporta's reemergence on the Barcelona stage promised growth, the Catalan club doesn't find itself in a significantly improved condition from the past. Analyzing Barca's current situation, in which the club still feels far from FFP, just four days before the new season, and being unable to register the club's dream signing, Olmo, indicates things aren't going in the right direction. Thus, the question arises: are FC Barcelona's financial problems much bigger than they appear?
Barca's struggle with the 1:1 rule isn't known, and even though President Laporta announced months ago that they would soon reach FFP, the management hasn't been able to materialize the same. While initially, it was promised that the Libero deal would be significant enough to bring the club to the 1:1 rule, current sources suggest that the Blaugrana club is considering selling De Jong to reach FFP.
Though it may sound harsh, the reality is perfectly quoted by journalist David Bernabeu,
""Laporta has been saying for months that Barcelona will return to the 1:1 rule this summer. Now there are 4 days left until La Liga starts, and you haven't registered Dani Olmo nor returned to the 1:1 rule.""
- David Bernabeu
Mundo Deportivo's reports about Barcelona's FFP issue clearly state that Barcelona still has to make more money to reach the 1:1. As of now, if the club fails to make a big sale, it is tough for Barcelona to get the 1:1 financial fair play rule before the 30th of August. A crucial part of this issue is that FC Barcelona hasn't been able to register Dani Olmo with La Liga.
Brought in as the marquee signing of the summer transfer window, Dani Olmo finds himself unregistered with the club just a few days before La Liga's first matchday. Even though the Blaugrana club may eventually register the Spaniard, this sends a substandard message overall.
Not to forget, one of the main reasons why Nico Williams decided to stay at Athletic this season was the winger's concern to be registered with La Liga before the first matchday. Given the club's fragile economic situation, it feels that they shouldn't hunt for another high-profile player this summer; otherwise, they may end up unregistered with him.
Clearly, Barcelona's financial problems are much bigger than the board presents them, and if the club wants to fight for European glory, they should resolve such situations as soon as possible.
