Barcelona wonder kid leads Spain to gold; emerges as a star on the Olympic Stage

In his first Olympic Games, Barcelona’s own Fermín López delivered a performance for the ages, leading Spain to a historic gold medal.

Across six matches, López bagged an astonishing six goals and an assist, becoming Spain's all-time leading goal scorer in Olympic history at just 21 years old. Scoring in every tournament round, he was unquestionably Spain's most valuable player, dubbed the Player of the Tournament for his outstanding contributions.

Erasing a 3-1 deficit in the second half, France would knot the game at three a piece to force extra time. However, substitute Sergio Camello would put Spain up again in the 100th minute with a sublime chip shot before the 23-year-old sealed the victory with a cool dink into an empty French net during the waning moments of the contest. 

Fermin’s two first-half goals were pivotal, earning him the Man of the Match award and further solidifying his status as Spain's new footballing hero.

López's Olympic triumph caps off a remarkable debut season for the 21-year-old attacking midfielder, who recorded 17 goals and eight assists in 50 appearances for club and country.
