By Shree Desai
Following the 3-5 humiliation against Villareal, Xavi dropped a bombshell by announcing his resignation. The Spanish coach revealed that he'll be resigning as the club's manager after 30th June 2024.
This announcement was an enormous shock for the cules who didn't expect such a revelation after a humiliating loss. Xavi's contract runs till 2025, but the coach has made it clear that he will stand by his decision to leave one year prior to the contract expiration.
After making some progress in a new post-Bartomeu era, things have gone back to square one. The winter transfer market is practically over. Also, the manager himself has announced his departure, so signing players might go on hold till a new manager graces the Camp Nou.
BILD reveals potential candidate who might succeed Xavi
According to the German outlet BILD, Hansi Flick is one of the candidates who might succeed Xavi at FC Barcelona. Following a 1-4 demolition of Germany by the hands of Japan, Flick was sacked the day after. It's been more than four months since then and Flick is still a free agent.
Flick is the only manager after Jürgen Klopp in the Barcelona's manager candidacy who is a free agent. This might make the job easier for the Catalan giants, as their financial health isn't at its best. Jürgen Klopp is also in the race who recently announced that he too will leave Liverpool by the end of the season.
Laporta is a big fan of these modern German coaches. After sacking Ronald Koeman, the Blaugranes president approached Hansi in an attempt to convince the German to take over the reins at Barcelona.
Apparently, Xavi was appointed only after Hansi Flick declined Laporta's offer. Other candidates in the race include Barça B coach Rafa Marquez, Bologna coach Thiago Motta and ex-Barcelona gaffer Luis Enrique.
