As the clock winds down on this summer's transfer window, FC Barcelona have nearly finalized their squad for the upcoming season. But the club's hierarchy is already planning ahead, identifying key targets for the summer of 2025.

At the top of their wish list is none other than Liverpool's versatile fullback, Trent Alexander-Arnold.

The 25-year-old has enjoyed a remarkable tenure at Anfield, establishing himself as one of the most prolific right-backs in Europe. Known for his ability to spark build-up play from deep positions in his own half, Alexander-Arnold's precise passing often slices through opposition defenses, offering Liverpool's forwards an opportunity to run at defenders in dangerous areas.

Alexander-Arnold's journey to becoming a world-class right-back was one of intrigue. Originally a central midfielder, he was transitioned to the right-back position by former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp, who saw the potential for a new breed of fullback that could dictate the tempo of the game from the wings. His technical prowess extends beyond simple distribution, as he's also been Liverpool's designated free-kick taker, a responsibility Klopp gave him during the 2019/2020 season.

Over his 310 appearances for the Reds, Alexander-Arnold has recorded 19 goals and 79 assists, underscoring his evolution into one of Europe’s most elite playmakers. His contributions have been pivotal in Liverpool's success, helping them clinch a Premier League title, a Champions League trophy, and various domestic cups across his eight-year tenure with the senior team.

Alexander-Arnold has faced some criticism for his occasional defensive lapses. Yet, his all-around talent remains undeniable, making him a prized asset for any top club. His contract with Liverpool is set to expire at the end of the 2024/25 season, making him eligible for a free transfer.

This has sparked interest from several clubs, with Barcelona now reportedly positioned to rival reigning La Liga champions Real Madrid in the race for his services. Trent's addition would represent a significant upgrade to Barcelona's back-four, adding an elite playmaker to coach Hansi Flick’s tactical setup.

While questions remain regarding Barcelona’s pursuit of Nico Williams, which could certainly resume next summer, the prospect of bringing Alexander-Arnold to Camp Nou offers Barcelona a new and exciting opportunity to further bolster their squad with one of the most unique players in football. The competition for his signature will be stiff, but a talent like Alexander-Arnold is worth the battle.
