It feels like only yesterday that the narrative surrounding Raphinha’s future at FC Barcelona was filled with uncertainty. The Brazilian winger was determined to stay at his dream club, fending off transfer rumors that multiplied with each passing day. Yet, through intense training and unwavering focus, Raphinha has secured his position and emerged as a crucial piece of Barcelona's early La Liga success under new coach Hansi Flick.
Initially, it appeared that Raphinha had fallen behind 17-year-old sensation Lamine Yamal in the pecking order on Barcelona's right wing. Yamal's breathtaking debut season convinced Cules that he was destined to become a mainstay on the right flank, leaving Raphinha’s role up in the air. Speculation intensified when Barcelona enthusiastically announced their bid for Athletic Club winger Nico Williams, whose Eruo 2024 performance saw his value skyrocket.
The outlook for the Brazilian seemed bleak, and questions were raised about whether he would even have a role in the squad for the 2024/25 season. But Raphinha’s preseason form not only flashed technical improvements, but it demonstrated a shift in his mindset that has carried over into the start of his campaign.
Coach Hansi Flick, impressed by Raphinha’s relentless efforts in training, made a tactical switch that has since altered the winger’s trajectory. Recognizing Barca’s deficiencies on the left flank, Flick decided to deploy Raphinha in an unfamiliar position. Despite it not being his preferred side, Raphinha has seamlessly adapted to life on the left flank, offering a new dimension of creativity and determination that had been missing in previous seasons.
Through the first four matches of the season, Raphinha has flipped the narrative surrounding his name completely on its axis. Leading Barcelona’s attack with three goals and four assists, Raphinha is quickly establishing himself as one of the team's most influential players. With Yamal and Raphinha flanking Robert Lewandowski, who looks revitalized under Hansi Flick’s guidance, Barcelona arguably boasts their most threatening front three since the ‘MSN’ era of Messi, Suarez, and Neymar.
Barca’s newfound attacking prowess has not only rejuvenated Raphinha’s career but also injected optimism into Barcelona’s outlook for the 2024/25 season. With a combined 17 goal contributions between them, Barcelona's trio have even outshone the much-anticipated Real Madrid attack headlined by Kylian Mbappé, Vinicius Jr, and Rodrygo.
While Madrid has stumbled out of the gate, dropping points in two of their first three matches, Barcelona has surged ahead, securing four consecutive victories to open their campaign —something they haven’t achieved since 2018. Their latest triumph, a 7-0 demolition of Real Valladolid, was a testament to their relentless attack and improving chemistry on the pitch.
Cules can now look forward with optimism as Raphinha, once written off by many, has become the face of Barcelona’s resurgence. If he can maintain his form, the number eleven could make the difference between another disappointing season and a return to the pinnacle of Spanish football.
Club President Joan Laporta and Sporting Director Deco, who were criticized for their failure to land Nico Williams, should be equally applauded for placing their trust in the Brazilian, who has been key to the Blaugrana’s hot start. As it stands, Raphinha is not just one of the best wingers in La Liga; he’s emerging as one of the best in Europe, period.
