Repeat offender? Raphinha’s history with journalist casts doubt on new exit report

Joaquim Piera reports Raphinha is open to leaving Barcelona, but the winger's history of calling the journalist a "liar" casts doubt on the story's accuracy.

A new report from Diario Sport journalist Joaquim Piera states that Raphinha has left his future at Barcelona "slightly open." While the player's family is happy in the city, the report indicates that Raphinha has developed doubts over his continuation next season following his latest spate of injuries.

Nevertheless, you need to approach this latest news bearing in mind a long and public history of conflict between the player and the reporter.

'The Liar': A history of tension

The Brazilian has publicly called Joaquim Piera a "liar" in the past for reporting "fake news" about his career.

The winger even posted on social media to call Piera's work "lying," "uninformed" and "unprofessional," specifically calling out the reporter for claiming an agreement had been made for his transfer to a Saudi Arabian club.

The accusation: Raphinha called Piera "lying," "uninformed" and "unprofessional."

Raphinha said: "I really don't know where they come up with all this nonsense... This place always spits out fake news."

Raphinha even said that he would be posting his rebuttals on his personal Instagram so his followers would see his story.

Why the story of Raphinha leaving doesn't stand up

While Raphinha hasn't responded to this morning's story yet, the narrative seems to fit the familiar pattern. Piera reports that Raphinha told the board of directors about his "doubts," which goes against the consistent message from the player that his goal was always to succeed at the Spotify Camp Nou.

  • The Market Value: Previously, Piera reported there were formal offers worth 80 million for the winger; a figure which was quickly dismissed as "fake news" by the player himself.

What happens now?

Given the Brazilian's passionate defense of his reputation in the past, it would not be surprising if a public denial were to be issued if the story continues to gain traction. However for now, the story from Piera is contrary to the player's previous expressed intent.

Until confirmation arrives from Raphinha or his representatives that his mind has been changed. This 'slightly open' future is probably more about the media needing fodder to report, rather than the player who is ready to pack his bags.

Until we hear something definitive from the player or club themselves, you're better off not believing that the Brazilian is going anywhere.

Raphinha is a passionate player. He loves the club and he knows what he can bring to Hansi Flick's system. I wouldn't think of him leaving before achieving European glory.
