England emerged victorious, France impressed, while the Netherlands and Spain failed to fully convince. Brazil, meanwhile, had to settle for a draw. As always, the World Cup has provided no shortage of storylines, and the 2026 tournament across the United States, Mexico and Canada is proving no different.
With every team now having completed their opening fixture, Matchday 1 is officially in the books. England were the final nation featuring a Barcelona representative to get underway, bringing to a close a fascinating first round of group-stage action.
While some results went largely as expected, the biggest surprise of the opening round undoubtedly came in Spain's goalless draw with Cabo Verde, a result that stunned many and immediately shook up Group H with the favourites faltering. Pedri, Ferran Torres, Gavi and Lamine Yamal failed to find that spark, so no surprise they do not feature.
With the dust beginning to settle on the tournament's opening matches, attention now turns to Barcelona's contingent. Which Blaugrana representative produced the standout performance of Matchday 1?
Jules Kounde
It says plenty about Barcelona's representatives' opening week that I am having to dig deep for standout performances. Kounde was actually rated as one of France's weakest starters by L'Equipe, receiving a modest 4/10 despite Les Bleus producing one of the most convincing displays of Matchday 1.
The rating may have been a little harsh, however and while Kounde was not among France's headline performers, he still delivered a solid and disciplined display at right-back. The Barcelona defender played his part in limiting the influence of Sadio Mané, while his overlapping runs helped create space for Michael Olise to thrive on the right flank. It was not a spectacular performance, but it was an effective one in a team that looked every inch a World Cup contender.
Anthony Gordon
There was plenty of excitement surrounding Anthony Gordon heading into the tournament, but his influence in the final third was relatively limited during England's opener. To make matters worse for his case, his main rival for a starting place, Marcus Rashford, came off the bench and found the back of the net.
Yet Gordon's performance still highlighted why he remains such a trusted option for both England and Barcelona over Rashford. While he may not have grabbed the headlines, his relentless pressing, defensive work rate, and willingness to hurry opponents from the front provided the intensity that Thomas Tuchel values so highly.
Lionel Messi
I thought I had run out of superlatives for him during his Barcelona days, but even at 38 years old, Lionel Messi is still producing moments of magic on football's grandest stage. The GOAT delivered a stunning hat-trick, with both his first and third goals already among the leading contenders for goal of the tournament. Each was a breathtaking strike from outside the box, showcasing the technique and ability that have defined his career.
Messi carried Argentina to World Cup glory four years ago, and he appears determined to do it all over again. Performances like this only add further weight to his legacy, making an already compelling case in the greatest-of-all-time debate even harder to dispute.
He may no longer wear a Barcelona shirt at club level, but for every Barça fan, Messi will always be one of our own. This man is untouchable.
