The transfer rumors never stop, not even during the World Cup. While all of Spain finds its rhythm at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the transfer speculation around Real Sociedad captain Mikel Oyarzabal and his potential summer switch to Barcelona has been escalating. From the 29-year-old striker’s perspective, any reported interest in him only serves as validation of the strong form that he showed at club level during the domestic season and at the World Cup.
“If they are linking me with Barça it’s because they are probably expecting me to perform well,” Oyarzabal told Mundo Deportivo.
“For now, all my concentration is on the World Cup, on how I can help Spain win.
Oyarzabal is currently in the form of his life and his 15-goal tally last La Liga campaign was a career high for the veteran forward, who also helped Sociedad win the Copa del Rey. Despite Barcelona’s significant interest and allure to don the famous blue and red kit, Oyarzabal insists on keeping his head down and focusing solely on the job at hand: winning the World Cup.
This is the veteran’s first major tournament after missing out on the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar after sustaining a devastating knee injury that ultimately prevented him from appearing for La Roja on the game’s biggest stage.
“ I’m trying not to give it too much attention, “ Oyarzabal said when asked about the growing rumors.
“ I’m trying to concentrate and I always say it a thousand times: Real Sociedad and San Sebastián are my home. I have grown up in this club, they are my safe haven and the one that gave me the opportunity to be here today.”
Oyarzabal still has two years remaining on his current contract in San Sebastian and the forward has made it clear that contract talks and transfer plans can wait until after the major tournament.
“This is my life and for now I don’t think about other things; I have my parents here and for me what matters is the national team,” Oyarzabal added. “I feel well and I feel at home.”
Why Oyarzabal has caught Barcelona’s eye
For those unfamiliar with Oyarzabal, the Basque attacker fits the profile for a Barcelona player under current coach Hansi Flick quite perfectly.
While Atletico Madrid's Julian Alvarez remains the dream acquisition, there's always an expectation to find a more attainable alternative for a player in that mold, and Oyarzabal fits the bill. Negotiations with Atletico hasn't been successfull and the relationship is very tense right now among the clubs.
Oyarzabal is a dynamic, multi-positional forward who presses high, possesses excellent awareness of space, and has an astute finishing touch. Combined with the fact he is already familiar with Barcelona’s core players within the Spanish national team (especially Lamine Yamal), he is an incredibly logical and sensible signing from a tactical standpoint.
What’s the plan?
As stated before, Barcelona must be patient for now. For the time being, Oyarzabal is on the World Cup stage to help Spain challenge for the title.
After a lackluster goalless opener against Cape Verde that raised concerns among fans, his continuation to the starting lineup sparked the offense to life, culminating in their 4-0 demolition of Saudi Arabia that boosted their chances in a group that also includes Uruguay.
Manager Luis de la Fuente referred to his standout attacker as a “silent assassin,” who, in the eyes of many, already is on his way to establishing a historic legacy with his country. Spain’s upcoming massive encounter against Uruguay, on paper, should be the team’s toughest challenge of the group stages.
Oyarzabal needs to maintain his performance level against tougher competition in order to try and guide Spain all the way to the finals and beyond.
