Barcelona goalkeeper, Marc-Andre ter Stegen, has made his contract renewal difficult by demanding to be made the second-highest-paid footballer at the club.

Daily Mail reports that Barcelona have rejected Ter Stegen’s demands of being paid £13 million ( €15m/$17m) a year, a value that would make him the second to Lionel Messi in terms of footballer wages at the Nou Camp.

The Spanish champions, however, do not want to give in to their star goalkeeper as that might instigate other players to demand the same.

Ter Stegen has been in phenomenal form for many seasons now, claiming the spot for one of the best goalkeepers in the modern game alongside Atletico Madrid’s Jan Oblak and Liverpool’s Alisson Becker.

The talks over the failed contract have opened the doors for many European giants to investigate into the possibility of signing the German international with Goal reporting Chelsea’s interest in the 27-year-old.

The Catalan giants have since attempted to bring down the rumours with a successful deal that would favour the two parties, however reaching an agreement is proving to be difficult.

After six successful and dominating seasons under the Blaugrana colours, the former Borussia Mönchengladbach goalkeeper believes that he deserves to earn a value closer to fellow teammates, Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez. A claim that is understandable, given the number of times Ter Stegen has saved goals for the club.

Barca have the same understanding as the player when it comes to his value towards the clubs endeavours but simply cannot afford the amount demanded due to the Financial Fair Play regulations.

The club has been in a tight situation when it comes to their finances, as was evident during the January transfer window with the only signing coming from outside of the given period; due to a long term injury sustained by Ousmane Dembele, counting him out for the remainder of this season.

There is an understanding, however, that the Barca board remain confident about Ter Stegen’s future at the club with intentions of signing a contract to keep the superstar until 2027.
