Lionel Messi to beat two football legends for another historical milestone

Lionel Messi is on the verge of breaking two more records set by footballing legends, Pele and Telmo Zarra, once all activities resume.

Messi has multiple records under his name with the most notable being recognized as the best player (Ballon d’Or) for a record-breaking six times. The Argentine international has a rare opportunity to break two more records when La Liga resumes in a few months.

Telmo Zarra, a prolific Spanish goalscorer with a record six Pichichi Trophies, after being the highest La Liga scorer in six different seasons, a recognition matched only by the Barcelona captain. Another record for Leo is to be known as a player with the most goals with a single club with Pele currently holding the title at 643 goals with Santos.

The Argentine is on a striking range for both these historic moments with 11 league games remaining this season along with the potential of a champions league second leg match against Napoli. If Barcelona does reach the finals of the Champions League, then Messi will have a maximum of 17 games left this season.

Leo is on the right track for another historic Pichichi trophy after scoring 19 league goals this season, five more than the current second-place goalscorer, Karim Benzema. Throughout the current season, Messi and Zarra have shared the honor of being recognized as six-time winners of the award. But the Argentine captain has a chance to achieve a remarkable seventh trophy if he ends the current La Liga campaign as the top scorer.

In doing so, Lionel will also be La Liga’s top scorer for the fourth consecutive year having won it in the previous 3 campaigns, a feat that would equal two Real Madrid legends, Hugo Sanchez and Di Stefano who achieved this between 1985-88 and 1956-59 respectively.

Pele’s historic record of the most official goals for a single club at Santos is also under threat as Messi chases this recognition with 627 of his own goals for Barca. He is short by only 16 goals with 11 league matches remaining and the Champions League yet to commence.

A no easy task for any footballer but Messi is known for making the impossible feel possible as the Argentine legend looks to lead the current Barca squad to La Liga glory once again this season.
