Quique Setien has come under a lot of criticism after failing to secure the necessary points to maintain his previously held lead over arch-rivals Real Madrid.
The recent draws against Celta Vigo and Atletico Madrid gave Los Blancos the necessary boost to go four points ahead of the Catalans to practically secure this season’s La Liga title.
This has triggered the Barca hierarchy to start lining up replacements for the 61-year-old as they find his tactics not fitting to the current squad. It is no surprise that Lionel Messi and co. have issues with their coaching staff as evident in their behavior in their matches against Celta and Atleti.
Though Xavi, Pep Guardiola, Roman Koeman and more are all lined up as possible replacements for Setien, They are all either unavailable before 2021 or do not wish to join under the current presidential term of Josep Maria Bartomeu.
Xavi is one such case, the former midfielder has clearly displayed his dislike for the current hierarchy that has prioritized money over their performance. Despite this, Mundo Deportivo’s Aguilar has reported that Xavi has agreed to join and will receive 6 million euros per season to coach his boyhood club.
The reason he has agreed to join prior to the presidential election in 2021 is due to the fact that he is the favourite choice for all the presidential candidates that are to run in the election meaning he will remain beyond the 2021 mark regardless of who is elected. Joining now will give him one year to realize the issues that are looming over the squad and he can work on just the tactical aspect rather than focusing on the board.
Having said that, Xavi does not want to disrespect Setien by talking about his move to Camp Nou and is rather focused on his career with Al Sadd for the time being. The former midfielder is also greatly respected by the members of the current squad which will help rectify the many problems in their current philosophy and game style.
Should Xavi join Barca under Bartomeu’s presidentship?
