Barcelona could miss out on major signings in January.

Barcelona’s interim President, Carles Tusquets, informed the public that in order for Barcelona to make any transfers next window, the club would have to sell players. The Spanish giants wish to bring in Memphis Depay and Georgino Wijnaldum but due to their horrific economic condition, they could not bring in either and it will be tricky to get anyone new to the club.

More from Everything Barca

The Catalans are going through undoubtedly one of their worst times. The club is without a board, player salaries take up seventy percent of the budget and their most precious asset will most likely leave the club at the end of the season. The club has reached rock bottom and Ronald Koeman has not been making significant improvements as he could not bring in most of the players he desired.

Koeman wished to bring in Depay as he has already had previous experience with the player while he was working at the Dutch national team. Koeman had built the team around Depay and his idea was to take the winger out of his natural position and play him as a number 9 in Camp Nou. The club is currently without a proper number 9 and Lionel Messi plays as a false nine to cover that role. Although the team is trying their best to adapt into the new formation, they still find themselves in the bottom half of the table having played 6 matches. This is quite a concerning situation for Koeman and the fans and the manager should be given some reinforcements in the near future otherwise the team might fail completely.

Wijnaldum was another player who was heavily linked with the Catalans but nothing came out of it in the end. The midfielder was also under Koeman in the Dutch national team and Koeman is looking to reunite with this player as he believes that Wijnaldum can solidify the midfield. The Dutch player rose in popularity due to his incredible performance against Barcelona in the UEFA Champions League semi-finals in the 2018/19 season.

Wijnaldum was having a difficult contract negotiation with Liverpool and that made pundits think that maybe Barca might be able to snatch him for free at the end of the season, however, even if they get Wijnaldum for free, they will still need to raise their budget in order to pay his wages.

The club should be looking to get rid of players such as Ousmane Dembele and Martin Braithwaite. They are already talking about a pay cut for all playing and non-playing members and the interim president has also said that the players are showing a willingness to accept the pay cut as if they do not accept it, the club could run itself into bankruptcy.
