Barcelona are going through a rather torrid season. It has been one of the worst starts in their history but they are slowly pulling their socks up. The Catalans sit eight points behind the league leaders, Atletico Madrid. Plus the Madrid side have one game in hand which could take the gap to 11 points.

Ronald Koeman needs some new faces at the club and once the new president has been elected, he should try to provide the manager a little support. Koeman tried bringing in a number of players but none of the deals went through, in January they should try to get at least a few of the players that the manager had originally wanted.
The Catalan giants, however, have many issues when it comes to making any possible transfers in January. The presidential elections are set for the 24th of January, which could possibly be delayed depending on the COVID-19 situation in the city. Without an elected president, the interim management cannot make any decisions regarding transfers.
Even if a president is elected, the club could possibly lose their targets to other clubs as they would have more time to negotiate, meaning Barca do not have many days to finalize a deal for any big-name signings.
This leaves Barca with only two options, sign players that have already been in contact with the club, players like Memphis Depay and Eric Garcia. The other alternative is to sign short-term solutions on possible loan deals.
The situation with Garcia is unique, in the sense that though the agreement with the player is finalized, Manchester City are ready to let the player leave for free in the Summer. They will not be making Garcia available for cheap in January and would rather have him in their squad until the season ends due to them having many unavailable players due to injuries and other coronavirus related issues.
Though Barca desire to sign Garcia in January due to their own injury issues, they will not be paying more than they wish on a player that is set to be free in the next transfer window.
