Lionel Messi tried to terminate his contract in August of last year but then decided to stay on and finish his last year with his boyhood club. He could have tried to take the club to the court but his love for the club prevented him from doing so. He loves the club and does his best to separate his personal feelings from his professional duties. He is completely focused on trying to win a trophy for Barcelona this season and that is his main goal.
The 33-year-old has been involved in a lot of rumors and has been linked with clubs such as Manchester City, Paris Saint-Germain, and Inter Miami. However, he has decided not to talk with any of these clubs and hold off all negotiations till the end of the season. This once again shows his commitment to the Catalan Kings. He could be earning a lot at any one of these clubs and could have tried to secure a lucrative contract but money is not his main priority.
Ronald Koeman’s plans are also coming together finally and they have been undefeated in the league in the last eight matches. This has helped them raise up to fourth in the table but fighting for the title is still a long shot. They have, however, already reached one final this season, which they unfortunately lost but they still have the UEFA Champions League and the Copa del Rey to look forward to.
At the end of the day, the Argentine has put his club in front of many of his other priorities and he would not have done so if he did not believe in his club. The introduction of a new president might convince him to stay in the club beyond this situation but the final decision is his own to make. No decisions have been made so far and we won’t know the answer till the end of the season but his actions have shown that he still has a lot of love for the club and will leave the club in the right way, not in a hasty manner.
