Jordi Cruyff backs Joan Laporta for Barcelona presidentship
With the elections for the Barcelona presidency coming ever closer, people are speculating as well as showing their support for their choice of candidate. Of the three final candidates, Joan Laporta, Victor Font, and Toni Freixa, Laporta is probably the most popular candidate owing to the fact that he already has experience in the role. He was recently even shown support from the legendary player, Johan Cruyff’s son, Jordi Cruyff.

Laporta had been the President of Football Club Barcelona from 2003 to 2010. Under his regime, the club won a multitude of trophies and even developed their greatest asset in their history, Lionel Messi. The club won 12 major trophies under Laporta including four La Ligas and two UEFA Champions League trophies. He also managed to cut down the financial debt that he had inherited when he joined the club and gave the best coach in the world, Pep Guardiola, a chance to show his genius.
Under him the club strived even though there were controversies and rumors about his need for power within the club. His time saw Barcelona produce the likes of Xavi, Andres Iniesta, Carles Puyol, etc. Thus it is no surprise that Jordi Cruyff backs Laporta to bring the club out of their financial mess. In an interview with El Largeruo, the former Barcelona player said,
"“Barcelonismo is hungry for the good times again, Laporta brought great times at the club with good, daring decisions and people want the good times on and off the pitch again. It’s a little bit of longing for the past. His banner was a very clear movement.”“Barça and their supporters need to be proud, to feel feared. Ex-players and players all speak well of Laporta and that’s not easy. Xavi himself said that he’s been the best president he had.”Source Sport"
Jordi was asked whether his father would have voted for Laporta and he said he was sure that Johan would have backed Laporta. He went on to say that the former president and his father shared a good bond and even collaborated on many occasions.
While many think that going back to Laporta would mean a step back for the club, he is the man with the most amount of experience and he successfully brought the club out of a slump once before. Although the situation was not quite so bad, he still managed to make Barcelona one of the most feared clubs in Europe and he has a concrete plan to do so again. Thus it would not be a surprise to see him win on 7th March and undertake his second reign as club president.
Who would you like to see as Barca’s next president?
