Georginio Wijnaldum is running out of time at Anfield with the 30-year-old yet to reach an agreement with Liverpool for a new contract amid growing interest from Barcelona.

The midfielder will officially be a free agent in the summer and while his future remains uncertain, he admits that an exit will be extremely difficult after enjoying five successful years with the Premier League giants.

While the Reds have attempted to renew his contract, the two parties are yet to reach an agreement. Despite this, Jurgen Klopp has remained faithful in having Wijnaldum as a vital part of the current squad but might watch him leave on a free transfer soon.

The Dutch international was asked about his future ahead of Liverpool’s clash against RB Leipzig in the Champions League where the midfielder gave some insights to the fans.

"“it’s not that I’m not happy and I have to leave or anything like that. But it’s not as easy as everyone thinks it is to make decisions for your future. You have to think about everything, first you have to negotiate with the club and those kind of things. It’s so difficult to deal with it all. That’s why it takes so long. I am really happy here, my family is happy, but besides that there is no news.”Source Goal"

Georginio Wijnaldum also made it clear that despite having just months to renew, his focus remains on the task at hand where a struggling Liverpool side sits 22 points behind Premier League leaders Manchester City. While they currently have a 2-0 advantage going into the second-leg of CL round-of-16 against Leipzig, they are likely to go trophyless this season if they don’t significantly improve their game.

Klopp’s side already lost to Arsenal in the EFL Cup, while getting knocked out of the FA Cup by Manchester United. Their only hope for silverware looks to be in the Champions League where giants like Bayern Munich seem the favorite. Unfortunately, their chances in the Premier League are much worse with them at the risk of not even reaching the Champions League qualifying position.

This has ignited conversations on how many of the existing superstars like Sadio Mane, Wijnaldum, or Mohamed Salah might decide to leave Anfield in the summer. Regardless of what happens, Barca’s Dutch coach, Ronald Koeman, remains keen on securing the player on a free transfer.

It is understood that the midfielder also enjoys the idea of playing at the Nou Camp in his final years, and given Barca’s current financial situation, they would only be willing to sign a 30-year-old midfielder if it was a free transfer. Meanwhile, Paris Saint-Germain, Juventus and Inter Milan have also shown interest.
