These sorts of huge breakthroughs or improvements do not go unnoticed and Luis Enrique has been monitoring the situation closely. In fact, the performance of the young star has impressed the Spanish manager enough to be handed his first call up for the Spanish national team.

The midfielder will be joining his compatriots in the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers. Jordi Alba and Sergio Busquets are the only other players from Barcelona to be selected in the squad. Fellow youngsters like Riqui Puig and Oscar Mingueza will have to be satisfied with the U-21 team. Spain have a relatively easy qualifying group and they should ward off the competition quite easily. They have Greece, Kosovo, Georgia, and Sweden in their group.

This will be Pedri’s big break into the international circuit and Spain could have a young talented squad in the near future. It is unfortunate that Ansu Fati missed out on the squad due to injury as he was doing quite well in international as well as club level. However, Barcelona have a lot of youngsters they can rely upon at the moment and one of them will eventually have to will in the boots for Lionel Messi which will be a very big task for them.
