The 33-year-old Argentine decided to leave Barcelona back in August of last year however, his move was halted by then-president, Josep Bartomeu. Messi decided to honor the last year of his contract but since then gave the public no concrete decision about his future.
The player got linked with David Beckham’s Inter Miami due to the former English legend’s desire to bring him to the side as well as due to the lucrative contract that the MLS side can provide. On top of that, Messi already owns a luxury apartment in Florida, the Porsche design tower. All the pieces seemed to fit but nothing is certain and pressure from Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester City could destroy Miami’s chances of securing the best player in the world.
Higuain says that Lionel Messi should join the MLS if it makes him happy.
Messi himself has said that he is interested in playing in America but he is not sure whether it is time to leave the European scene. His compatriot, Higuain, in an interview with ESPN, said that his former national teammate should join the MLS if that makes him happy and that Inter Miami would happily have him. He said in the interview,
"“[Andrea] Pirlo came here [to MLS] when he was a world champion, so did [Thierry] Henry, [David] Villa and [Blaise] Matuidi,”“I see no reason why Lionel couldn’t come here. If it would make him happy, we would welcome him with open arms.“At some point, he will decide where he wants to play play and what is in his own best interests on a personal and sporting level, but in my opinion, he has the caliber to continue competing for the Champions League.”Source Goal"
So will the six-time Ballon d’Or winner join the South Florida franchise? The answer is probably not. The Argentine still has a few years left to give to top European football and a move to the MLS does not make sense at the moment. A move to Manchester City or PSG is much more likely however, if Barcelona manages to win a trophy this season, he may very well extend his contract with the Catalans, leaving all the other clubs empty-handed and disappointed.
Do you think Lionel Messi will join Inter Miami next season?
