Bayern Munich knocking on the door for Barcelona right-backs
By Ali Iqbal
FC Bayern Munich is looking to strengthen their defense, and Barcelona are a team that Bayern may be interested in negotiating with. According to Marca, Bayern have inquired about the price tags of right-backs Sergino Dest, Sergi Roberto, and Emerson, with Dest being the preferred choice for the German club (however all the three right-backs are reportedly happy to stay at Barca).

This leaves Barca with an interesting choice. The current right-back situation for the club is formidable, as although none of the three are superstars, they are all competitive. Dest is the most interesting right-back, due to his young age and high ceiling, alongside his creativity and crafty dribbling technique. Dest fits the mold of the modern right back very well, as his offensive versatility allows the club to be more expansive and provides more width in attacking buildup. However, there are holes in his defensive play, and he needs more to improve his defensive coverage in order to be his best for the Catalan club. Bayern have been interested in Dest before, and the interest has not wavered much to this day.
Barcelona could strategically loan one of the three fullbacks to Bayern in order for them to gain valuable experience and playtime. This is a less-risky option for Barca, and can allow them to give enough focus and attention to two right-backs at a time. This would not be the first loan deal between the two giants, as Barca’s Philippe Coutinho had a loan spell at Bayern before returning back to the club.

From the Bayern point of view, although Benjamin Pavard plays the position for the club quite well, it would make sense for them to add a quick and attack-oriented right-back like Dest to complement Alphonso Davies on the left side. Bayern is a club that conducts efficient and sensible transfer business, so it would be interesting to see how much they would want to spend for a Barca right-back.
In summer of consistent incomings and outgoings, it will be interesting to see if Barca sells in the right-back department, or decide to keep and maintain their depth in the position.
