Barcelona dropped a bombshell through their official statement saying that Lionel Messi will not renew with the club. Messi’s contract extension was widely anticipated but in the turn of events, a contract couldn’t be signed due to structural and economical obstacles (La Liga regulations).

Messi was even ready to take a wage cut in order to stay at the club but now his departure looks imminent. President Joan Laporta always assured the fans that Messi’s talks are progressing well and indeed an agreement was reached. Sadly, due to Barcelona’s poor financial structure and La Liga’s stringent regulations, registering Messi and even other players like Sergio Aguero and Memphis Depay looks like an impossible task. The 34-year-old will now search for another club unless there can be a miraculous turnaround (which looks highly unlikely).
