Last season when Lionel Messi wanted to leave Barcelona, the former president, Josep Maria Bartomeu, stopped him by threatening legal recourse. Messi, although unhappy with the direction of the club, stayed on because he loved the club and after Bartomeu resigned and Joan Laporta was elected, Messi made up his mind to stay beyond the 2020/21 season. This would be a tough thing to achieve given the club’s finances and the league’s new wage rules but still, both parties tried their best. In the end, it was revealed that the wage structure demanded by the league was being violated if Messi was to remain at the club and thus they were forced to let him go.

Paris Saint-Germain was the club that ultimately got the player after a lot of speculation and it was thought that Messi would finally be the missing piece to their puzzle. With the likes of Messi, Neymar, and Mbappe in one team, there was no chance of failure. However, Messi is not being able to perform at all and the team was even eliminated from the Champions League in the round of 16. This made him want to leave the club and Sergio Busquets says that he would love to have Messi back. In a recent interview with RAC1 he said,

Busquets is just one of the many Barca players who have spoken about Lionel Messi. It started with Jordi Alba who mentioned that he would love to have Messi back and then Pedri expressed the same sentiments as well. It is not just the players, however, as Xavi Hernandez, the coach also said that Messi is always welcome to join Barcelona again.
