German legend sends apology to Pedri following Euro Quarterfinal clash
- Pedri suffers a knee sprain early in the Quarterfinal clash against Germany at the Euros.
- Toni Kroos apologizes after his rough challenge brought a heartbreaking end to the Euros for Pedri.
The Euro 2024 Quarterfinal clash between Spain and Germany lived up to the expectations of football fans. Spain edged past Germany in a high-voltage encounter, thanks to an extra-time late winner from Mikel Merino.
Pedri's knee sprain rules him out of Euro 2024
Though Spain traversed to the Semifinals of the Euro tournament, they faced a massive setback in Pedri's injury. Only 8 minutes into the eventful fixture, a rough tackle from the German legend Toni Kroos sent Pedri off the pitch. Recent reports suggest the Catalan midfielder might take 5-6 weeks to return to the football pitch.
After suffering an internal ligament grade two sprain on his left knee, Pedri's Euro tournament came to a heartbreaking end. On his way back to the dressing room, the 21-year-old seemed devastated, and his limping and crying made emotions visible on the face of every Spanish fan.
Speaking to the media after the match, Luis De La Fuente seemed visibly infuriated by Pedri's loss: the Spanish boss said,
""Kroos' challenge on Pedri deserved a RED card.""
- De La Fuente
Kroos apologizes to Pedri
Though Kroos went away without even a booking for the challenge, the German asked for forgiveness from Pedri after the match. Unable to meet the young midfielder after the fixture, the veteran seemed visibly upset for Pedri: he posted,
"“Wishing Forgiveness and get well soon to Pedri! Logically it wasn’t my intention to hurt you. A speedy recovery and all the best, you’re a great player”"
- Toni Kroos
What turned out to be the last match of the illustrious career of Toni Kroos caused a crucial setback for the Spanish side. As La Roja faces an unbeaten France in the Euro Semifinals, Pedri's absence could prove detrimental for De La Fuente's men.
In such a scenario, the mettle falls again on Dani Olmo, Fabian Ruiz, and the Barca sensation Lamine Yamal to carry the nation toward the Euro Finals.
With a month left for the 2024/25 La Liga campaign to kick off, Pedri's injury is not a trouble for FC Barcelona. Moreover, as per UEFA's compensation policy, if Pedri's injury lasts more than 28 days, the Catalan club would get compensation worth 20,548 euros every further day.
However, the Blaugrana club would want the creative playmaker to return soon, as they hope to kick in the new season with their full-strength squad under Hansi Flick.
