Rafael Leao has been in Barcelona’s shortlist for a long time. Joan Laporta has pursued Leao since 2021 and views him as a dream signing for the club. With this we can now see a major shift in Barcelona’s transfer strategy.

Reports from Matteo Moretto suggest that AC Milan is willing to accept between €45m and €50m plus bonuses for Rafael Leao. This price is the lowest the Italian club has ever asked for the winger.

Leao is very excited in the opportunity to joining the club and has offered himself to Deco, the sporting director of Barcelona.

Rafael Leao: Profile and statistics

To get a better idea of his profile, we can examine his statistics for this season to understand his output.

  • He completes around 3.1 dribbles per game with a success rate of 58%.
  • He has contributed 12 goals and 9 assists in Serie A this season.
  • He records 2.4 key passes per match.
  • These numbers prove he is one of the most effective 1v1 specialists in Europe.

The Rafael Leao enigma

With Rafael Leao, we see a lot of question marks. Leao has not exploded this season the way he did in previous ones. His peak was when he hit 15 goals and 12 assists in the 24/25 campaign.

Those numbers are very impressive for a winger playing in the Italian league which is known for being defensive and physical.

But his performances haven't been consistent enough for a player who has shown so much potential ever since he burst onto the scene with AC Milan, and his relationship with the Milan fans has also cooled over the period. They no longer see him as one of the main guys of the club.

Laporta wants him. That part is clear. But there is disagreement within the club despite Laporta’s approval. Some board members consider him an alternative rather than a priority. They worry about his defensive work.

Leao wins only 42% of his total duels. He often stays high up the pitch during the defensive phase. Some inside Barcelona worry he drifts in and out of games too often for a club that needs consistent end product on the left. This profile might clash with the highline and intense pressing Hansi Flick requires from the players.

What lies ahead

Rafael Leao is a world class winger no doubt. He is a player who can start on the left and drift inside. In Barcelona, he can link well with Lamine Yamal and can stretch defences.

Yet we also get someone who has never delivered consistent 20-goal seasons. He turns 27 in June, so he is still relatively young and has the potential to develop massively in the right system. But the €50m price tag feels fair only if he hits the ground running under Flick.

Barcelona has not made Leao the primary target yet. Given Barcelona’s finances, they need to narrow down the shortlist of players they wish to sign this summer. The club continues to prioritize a centre-forward and a defensive centre-back.

We are looking at a market opportunity that depends on whether the coaching staff truly believes they can integrate his specific traits into the current tactical system.

If Barcelona move quickly, they can secure him before other clubs jump in. If they wait, they risk losing him or paying more later.

The ball sits in Barcelona’s court. They must decide soon whether Leao becomes part of their summer plan or stays another name on the long list of alternatives.
