Most have Barça Femení down as favourites to retain their Champions League trophy in Warsaw come May and, well, they underlined why on opening night. Last Wednesday, Pere Romeu's team crushed Paris FC 5-2 at Estadi Johan Cruyff, despite actually falling behind early on. Kerolin, Clara Serrajordi and Caroline Graham Hansen were all on target, while last season's top-scorer Ewa Pajor bagged a brace in Sant Joan Despí.
Barcelona are, inarguably, Europe's dominant force. The Catalan giants are seeking to reach a seventh successive Champions League Final, winning four of the previous six, including crushing OL Lyonnes 4-0 in Oslo last May. Since the introduction of the group stages, Barça have won 27 of 31 matches at this stage of the competition, finishing top of the first-ever league phase last season. Thus, the Blaugrana are favourites to do so again, expected to win very easily in Rome on Wednesday.
So, can AS Roma pull off the near impossible? Well, last season, les Giallorosse won a third Serie A Femminile title in four years, with this their fifth successive Champions League campaign. Having finished 14th in last season's league phase, thereby eliminated, Gianpiero Piovani's team are aiming for better this time.
