Anthony Gordon has openly tried to create transfer links by calling Barcelona the "best team he has ever played against" after recent encounters with them in Europe. Although he has captured the eyes of Barcelona's scouts, buying him would represent a financial headache for President Joan Laporta.

The 85m wall

Newcastle United have set their demands for their star winger, and it will take upwards of 85m to sign the winger in summer 2026.

  • Contract situation: The winger is a key component of Newcastle's project, meaning the Premier League club will have no pressure to bring the asking price down.
  • Wage bill: He would need to fit into a reconstructed wage structure, that currently includes high-paid veteran stars.

Tactical fit: What Gordon brings to Flick’s Barca

Putting the price tag aside, the question is whether Gordon improves Barcelona's starting eleven. His profile perfectly suits what Hansi Flick expects from his wide players:

  • Intense Pressing: The winger is in the top percentiles for defensive numbers among wingers. This is vital for Flick's high-pressing strategy.
  • Directness: Unlike traditional Barcelona wingers, who are gifted at playing with their feet, Gordon loves to run into channels behind the defence and adds the verticality that Lamine Yamal lacks. This would make them a good pair.
  • Versatile: The 25-year-old is happy playing on both sides of the pitch, providing good cover for to both wings.

Should Barcelona pursue this transfer?

It is undeniable that Anthony Gordon is gifted, and his flattering comments are clearly a message to the board. Nevertheless, it would be a high-risk, high-reward strategy from the club's perspective given the existing players in the squad like Raphinha, and other prospects coming from La Masia.

If the 1:1 rule is enforced and a high cash flow comes in the club, then Barcelona might think about this 'luxury' option. If that is not the case it would be more worthwhile to invest on other cheaper, high value players or permanently signing Rashford.

Barcelona must try to solve the problem in defense first before worrying about that of the attack.

Reports from Mundo Deportivo and RAC1 have claimed that Deco is in contact, but there have been no actual conversations between both parties as of yet. The board will wait to see if Newcastle's own financial situation force them to lower their asking price towards the end of the window.

Until then, Gordon remains a luxury player who is eyed up, but a cost too great for now.
