Hansi Flick conducted his pre-match press conference ahead of the Osasuna tie and spoke of a comment which all Barca fans should consider closely. Not about the transfers, not about the VAR, but this:
"You can have the best players but to win titles you must have the best team."
This one sentence summarizes what Flick wants from Barca.
Philosophy of the comment
This isn't a cliché, but rather the philosophy which guides all the decisions Flick has made since arriving.
He has consistently favored team structure over individual talent, pressing intensity over flair and team harmony over star power.
This explains why Flick is so selective in his transfers. He does not want the best player available. He wants the right player to slot into this team. And a signing that unbalances the team is worse than no signing at all.
Competing with Europe's best
When asked if Barca can compete with the semi-final teams in the Champions League, Flick didn't hold back: "100% yes". He is clearly a coach who is confident that this team has all the quality to go all the way in Europe despite the recent Champions League exit.
Flick on the VAR scandals
Flick refused to engage in any discussion over VAR: "I do not want to think about this. I do not waste my time on this. For me this subject is closed."
The mood around the club
The most underrated aspect of his press conference was his comment regarding the club's atmosphere: "Today I can say that the club is living in a wonderful atmosphere, and everyone here is one hundred percent committed to this club. Even the fans and supporters."
After years of locker room leaks, internal bickering and player dissatisfaction, that is quite an admission and a testament to Flick, and the structure he has created.
This is not about tactics, it is about culture. In my opinion, this is Flick's greatest achievement in Barcelona so far.
