Barcelona are completely clear about their requirements this summer. it’s three definite positions that the club will be targeting for new arrivals. With the summer transfer window approaching, Barcelona know precisely who they are after.
The three targets
Striker:
The most desired signing and the obvious priority for the centre forward position is Julian Alvarez. Many options are being looked into but the only confirmed back-up option is Joao Pedro.
With Lewandowski’s position in the first team still unknown, Barcelona require an experienced replacement and long term number nine to come in.
Left winger:
Barcelona's attempt to land Rashford permanently has stalled over the £30m asking price from United. There are alternatives emerging in the form of Ez Abde, Jan Virgili, Victor Munoz and Andreas Schjelderup.
Rafael Leao has also been linked with the club with Joan Laporta being very interested in bring him to the Camp Nou. Barcelona are primarily looking for young and affordable options to reinforce the position.
Centre-back:
Inter's Bastoni is considered to be the top priority for the defence. However, Inter Milan's valuation of €70 million poses a major hurdle for Barcelona.
In the mean time, Jon Martin from Real Sociedad and Jhon Lucum from Bologna have been identified as backups.
Why these three?
The team Flick has this season has been good. It has even been good enough to win La Liga.
However, the elimination in the Champions League has shown the disparity between Flick's side and Europe's best. Better strength, depth, and quality is what Barcelona are looking to address in the coming transfer window.
The financial reality
Barcelona can't afford all three targets at top dollar at the same time. Ordering the transfers is key:
- Striker has the highest budget.
- Centre-back takes the next priority once striker deal is done.
- Left winger needs to be cheap, yet a high quality signing.
All transfers will be fueled by sales. Sales from fringe players will be required before Barcelona can flex its financial muscles in the transfer market.
The bottom line
There are three key positions for transfer attention this summer. Sporting director Deco has clearly identified targets for each and a sequence for the spending to ensure the best financial outlay.
Hansi Flick wants clever choices this summer and the next few months will reveal whether Deco and the Barcelona board can manage the transfers.
